The Timeless Journey of a Jazz Sanctuary

History of Bennetts Lane

Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, founded by Michael Tortoni, was a renowned live jazz venue in Melbourne, Australia. From its inception in November 1992 until its closure in February 2017, the club was nestled at the end of Bennetts Lane off Little Lonsdale Street.

Bennetts Lane hosted a variety of local, national, and international musicians and served as the flagship venue for the Melbourne Jazz Festival for many years. Praised by Lonely Planet as “The World’s Best Jazz Club,” it also won the Best Venue Award at the Australian Jazz Awards in 2003 and 2004. In April 2017, Tortoni relocated Bennetts Lane to Leslie St, Brunswick, carrying forward the legacy of the original club.

It is one of the great rooms in the world from my experience of playing…it is just the most beautiful acoustics, the small room is a dream.
